Earthquakes Everyday Lesson Revised and Available + 2 other lessons
((1)) I have completely revised my 100-question GIS-based Earthquakes
Everyday lesson on:
http://rockyweb.cr.usgs.gov/public/outreach/sgu/worldearthquakeslesson.html
Improvements include:
1) The fact that you can now download current earthquake data from the USGS
in comma-delimited format; therefore, no more editing of the clunky text
file!
2) Use of the new plate boundary file I notified you all about last month.
(Actually, I combined the 4 types of plate boundaries into one file and
added an attribute to reflect the type of boundary). Students compare the
generalized boundary to the new boundary, and analyze the relationships of
earthquakes to converging, ridge (spreading), transform, and diffuse
boundaries.
3) Analyzing how many earthquakes occur at specified distances from plate
boundaries.
4) Comparing the spatial pattern of this week's earthquakes to those of an
entire year.
5) Determining how many earthquakes occurred in each country.
6) Changing map projections to analyze the Pacific Ring O' Fire.
The data is on the above site as well.
((2)) I have also revised my 1900-2000 Population Change Lesson on:
http://rockyweb.cr.usgs.gov/public/outreach/sgu/popchangeusalesson.html
and my USA Tornadoes lesson on:
http://rockyweb.cr.usgs.gov/public/outreach/sgu/tornadolesson.html
If you use this lesson and find anything that needs to be improved, those
suggestions are always appreciated!
