NIEA Conference + USGS tribal lands maps
I represented the USGS at the NIEA [National Indian Education Association]
conference this week in North Carolina. Over 3,000 people were in
attendance at this event--tribal college presidents, educators, lobbyists,
teachers, and others. Find out about what the NIEA is, why we are working
with the NIEA, Dr Maya Angelou, our mapping workshop, our information
exhibit, and future opportunities between the USGS and Native Americans
with regard to GIS, education, and more, in my report with photographs on:

It is very rewarding and a privilege to work with the Native American
community with regards to geography and education and I encourage you to do
the same, or at the least, to teach about Native Americans in your classes.
I posted a listing of USGS maps that show Indian lands on:

With regards to GIS in education, many tribal colleges include courses that
include GIS, remote sensing, and GPS. Educators, tribal land managers,
water resources folks, cultural preservationists, biologists, and others on
tribal lands are increasingly using GIS in innovative ways that consider
traditional ways of thinking along with spatial technology. Here are a few
sites illustrating this point:
