Plate Boundary shape files
After a number of inquiries (and my own) over the past several years, I
have obtained a higher resolution world plate boundaries file than the one
on the ArcVoyager CD. The New Zealand educators and others will be pleased
to find out that there is no longer a break at 180 degrees longitude, and
the Mid Atlantic plate boundary doesn't stop at the N Pole--hooray! I can
still see some reasons, however, where the original plat_lin.shp file from
the CD will still be useful, however.
I can't claim credit for this excellent data set; rather, all the credit
should be given to: Paul Kimberly of the Smithsonian's Global Volcanism
Program. These are the files that were published as the end papers in "The
Encyclopedia of Volcanoes" (1999) Academic Press. They are currently
working on a more accurate higher resolution set for the Dynamic Planet Map
project that should be available sometime in July 2004. Keep that in mind
as well. Let me know if you are in need of the data ... it unzips into 4
shape files - transform, ridge, diffuse, and converging.
